GOING, GOING
DISTANT DANCES presents an evening of live improvised and scored music and dance performance, with a post-performance open floor for all bodies that like to move
Wednesday 9th October 2024
at AMATA, Falmouth University (Penryn Campus) Studio L
£12 full/ £10 concession/ £8 Falmouth and Exeter Students
What makes us human?
How does sound connect us?
What keeps us going?
And what happens when we stop?
DISTANT DANCES presents an evening of live music & dance performance, initiated by dancer and choreographer Kyra Norman and musician and composer Barnaby Taylor in collaboration with an intergenerational cast of experienced, improvising dancers and musicians from around Cornwall. With live drawing by Faye Dobinson. Following the performance, there will be an open floor for all bodies that like to move to dance together, immersed in Studio L's surround sound system
Photo: Lilou Dobinson. Seen here: Winona Guy, Polly Motley, Kyra Norman, Lois Taylor, Katie Lusby, Olivia Walton, Kuldip Singh-Barmi, Claud Tonietto
The evening's programme includes live instant compositions where dancers & musicians find pattern, connection, rhythm & meaning together, in the moment; together with two longer dance improvisation pieces structured by Kyra Norman in collaboration with the dancers. Original music compositions by Kath Buckler and Barnaby Taylor will utilise the venue's immersive audio to blur the line between music and natural and human soundscape.
Following the performance, there will be an opportunity for you to kick up your heels and join in the dancing in an anything-goes disco-style mode: move around and do your thing within the surround sound space.

Deep Time Moving: Sound - Texture - Movement A workshop/ studio sharing at CAST, Helston
Saturday 11th November 2023, 11:00 - 16:00
£10/ £6
DEEP TIME MOVING: Sound - Texture - Movement
Deep Time Moving is a long-term movement-led art work unfolding in response to the unique geology of the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall, led by choreographer Kyra Norman
"After ten years' living on the Lizard, in early 2023 I began work on a collaborative, interdisciplinary performance work, reflecting on the material realities and imaginative possibilities of life on this unique lump of rock, at this time.
"I'm asking the question: how might an embodied imagining of the distant past, right here, help us reach toward new understandings of our globally complex present moment, and - in turn - imagine new futures, here and elsewhere?"
With this one-off workshop we invite you to join us for a day of structured discussing, practicing, wondering, moving and imagining, together
11am - 1pm: a series of short talks and practical tasks sharing some of the strategies we've been exploring over the last six months of Deep Time Moving activity: in particular, focusing on sound, texture and movement
1pm - 2pm: Lunch: pre-book at CAST Café or bring a packed lunch
2pm - 4pm a guided movement exploration of settling/unsettling, drifting, re-patterning, listening, imagining, and rest. With deep Earth sounds recorded by composer/ sound artist and Deep Time Moving collaborator Shirley Pegna. You are welcome to participate in this field of activity as a mover, and/or to observe, draw, write, or shift between these modes over the course of the afternoon
Find out more about the wider project here: https://www.deeptimemoving.co.uk/

A movement improvisation & performance workshop for Inner Ground
Saturday 4th March 2023
A contemporary dance company based in Cornwall, for dancers aged over 50
10:30 - 13:00 Chacewater Village Hall, near Truro, Cornwall
bookings via hello@innergrounddancecompany.com
This workshop with Kyra Norman for Inner Ground begins with two questions:
How might we tune into the world around us through an attention to movement?
and,
What if the activity of performance is about discovery, rather than display?
This will be a guided adventure in movement and dance. We'll move with care and curiosity: individually, in pairs, in small groups and all together. I'll offer some simple tasks that will prompt complex, multilayered outcomes. There will, inevitably, be laughter.
Together, we will create a shared space for experiencing ease, challenge and joy, through our own physicality and in the witnessing of others, on the move.

Image: a montage of the 12 shortlisted films screened at this event
Thursday 10th November 2022
at the Everyman Cinema, Trinity, Leeds, UK
I was on the jury for this year's competition - the LIFF Screendance Competition always attracts a great range of submissions, and this year's films make for a lively, diverse line-up: "...where cinematography and choreography meet, this compelling collection of international dance films navigate the endless ways a moving body can propel a story. From dancing through depression in an urban landscape, to upended performers in tidal terrains, we explore the panorama of this burgeoning form. Whether explicitly narrative or more abstract in approach these innovative shorts all share a particular engagement with choreography, offering a different take on this experimental film genre..."
To book for the screening, click here. The films are also available to watch online 9th - 17th November 2022, see title link above. Highly recommended.

In the morning one of us - me, Winnie Guy, Claud Tonietto - will lead a group warm-up, and then we'll play with some movement improvisation scores. We'll have lunch and time to chat and catch up together. In the afternoon, anyone can propose a movement idea/task they're working on, or are interested in trying out, and we'll explore it together - we'll figure out exactly how that works on the day. This month is also a chance to reflect on and revisit some of the ideas and tasks introduced by Orrow Bell in their recent workshop with us (see below). HowNow Open Sessions began in October 2021, and are usually monthly. To receive updates, join our mailing list by emailing hownowcollective@gmail.com

One. Another. a contemporary dance workshop at Inner Space Newlyn
Saturday 11th June 2022
This workshop at Inner Space will share some of the processes and ideas developed during Kyra's One. Another. residency at Jupiter Gallery, Newlyn (see link). It's open to anyone interested in exploring some fundamental movement principles, dipping into some structured improvisation (also known as playing!), and trying out some simple compositional/ choreographic tasks.
In keeping with Kyra's regular weekly Distant Dances sessions at the Acorn in Penzance, this workshop offers a welcoming, safe space for people to find ease, challenge and joy in the physical, visceral experience of moving, together. With great music, in a beautiful space. No prior dance experience required - for all bodies that like to move. Note: workshop participants are warmly invited to join us at Jupiter on the evening of Saturday 11th June for an informal sharing to conclude the residency, subject to availability, places limited.
To reserve your place, and confirm timings, please email kyra.norman@gmail.com or contact Maria 07800511784 -innerspacenewlyn@gmail.com
One. Another. A residency/ take-over at Jupiter Gallery, Newlyn
Image: Faye Dobinson
5 - 12 June 2022
A residency/ take-over/ week-long process of dance performance research. Beginning with the idea of paying attention - to the space between - one person and another, one sound and another, one moment and another, one action and another, one perspective and another.... What if this space, this gap, is where we can actually live?
"To live in the gap, between the moment that is expiring and the one that is arising..." (Laurie Anderson, Heart of a Dog) at Jupiter Gallery, Newlyn, Cornwall in collaboration with composer and sound artist, Julia Macara and invited dance artists, movement practitioners, performers, including Darcey Ball, Winona Guy, Polly Motley, Jude Page, Talia Sealey & Claud Tonietto, and visual artist Faye Dobinson
There will be opportunities to participate and informal sharings during the week: if you'd like to be kept in the loop about these, email kyra.norman@gmail.com

2020
Friday 28th February 2020 Distant Dances launch, at the Hypatia Trust, Penzance, Cornwall
"Over there, on the horizon, a tiny figure is moving. Somewhere inside, under the ribs, a memory stirs..."
Join choreographer Kyra Norman, for a workshop and structured conversation as part of her new work, Distant Dances
"Distant memories, distant melodies, distant moves: somewhere on the edge of our perception, dance hovers. Distant Dances is a research process, a way of bringing dance into conversation with everyday life, and a series of low-key, no-holds-barred, knees-ups. Like anything, the more you think about dance, the more complicated it gets: Distant Dances keeps things simple. Most people 'used to dance' – lots of people still do. Let's get moving and remembering some of those moves, what felt good, why we did it, and why we might dance together today...
"When we dance together we tune in, we negotiate, we attend to our environment, we take responsibility for our shared experience, sometimes we blend seamlessly into one, sometimes we stick out like a sore thumb: we live at a time that requires all of those skills"
What to expect: we will move around a bit, watch some short films, discuss some ideas, drink hot drinks. Please bring biscuits and wear comfy clothes
Kyra has worked in dance, theatre, film and contemporary arts contexts for twenty years, as an artist, performer, choreographer, researcher and instigator of ad hoc events: the rough, the smooth, the thoughtful, the frivolous, the raw and the cooked
